Vision, Passion, and Purpose

What is it that is important to you? What have you come to this planet to accomplish? How can you take the gifts you have been given and use them to find meaning in your own life and to help others? Through a number of guided meditations and insightful teachings, you will explore a vision for your life which is filled with passion, meaning, and purpose.

Your Uniqueness

Tuning into your own distinctive calling involves an alignment process in which the goal is to affirm our uniqueness, so there will be no need for self-improvement--no need to add anything that's not there. In fact, as we move deeper into this process, we will see that our main work, most of the time, will simply be to get out of our own way.

We are working with a power that is greater than the conscious personality. We are working with the power of your destiny. And one of the things that I will be focusing on, again and again, is that when you move toward your destiny, which I distinguish from fate--destiny being something that you actively pursue; fate being something that you simply resign to--there are forces that will embrace you and hold you and carry you in a way that the personality cannot even imagine.

Our goal in manifesting our life's work is not to know every little aspect of who we are, why we're here, what is this world, and what we're supposed to do. If you take this tactic, you may wait for lifetimes to figure out what you're supposed to do in this world. However, if we open up to our vitality and to the sense of urgency that flows within us, this will open the creative power that will manifest our work in this world and we will have the pleasure of experiencing our selves living and working in cooperation with the deepest forces of life.

Guided Meditation

I would advise you not to do this meditation driving in a car, but to find a place where you can be undisturbed, clear, and within yourself.

So get quiet. Feel the ground beneath you. And feel the earth supporting you, just as the earth herself is supported--floating through infinite space on the ineffable cosmic law that supports billions of planets and galaxies and energies; that grows the trees and the grass; that moves the clouds and spins the planets. As you breathe in and breathe out, know that you are a part of this incredibly rich, textured harmony. And that the DNA within you contains the history, not only of the entire human race, but even further back. So that everything that ever was is part of you. And any resource and any possibility is just a thought away.

Breathe in; breathe out. Relax your shoulders; relax the back of the neck. There's no need to create anything, no need to attain anything. Just feeling the flow of energy, the natural flow of the life force, which is your birthright.

And I want you now, using the power of your imagination, to just imagine that you have gone out for a walk on a very pleasant spring day. And you're walking through a meadow that is very lush, very safe, very beautiful. The wind blows gently; the trees are overhead.

The sun shines through the sky, illuminating its blue.

And you know that you have things to do, and you know you have decisions that you must make in the future. But right now, you've just gone for this easy walk--to relax, to be open, and to allow yourself to listen. And as you walk through this very safe, easy, pleasant meadow and listen to the wind and the birds and the rustling of the leaves, you EDIT-- "once again" begin to think back on the last six months of your life: on the paths you have been walking on, on the paths you have chosen to abandon, on relationships and goals--on everything that's been happening to you. And you walk, and you think, and you're open, and you feel what's really been important during this last period of your life, what's been driving you, what's been whispering to you.

What has your heart been secretly hoping for?

And as these thoughts run through you, you come across a very powerful and stately oak tree, which is just inviting you to sit down and relax even more deeply.

So you sit down by the tree, your back leaning against the trunk of the tree, and you're so open and so relaxed, so sensitive, that you can feel the ground vibrating beneath you, and you can almost feel the sap flowing through the tree, flowing through the base of your spine.

And as you breathe in and breathe out, you are in the center; you are with nature. You're so light and so open that you see something in front of you that you could not see before, because you've moved into your creative vision. Right in front of your eyes you see a wondrous cave; very ornate, mysterious because there seems to be a light emanating from this cave. And because you're in a deep, relaxed state of consciousness you can literally float out of your body. And if you find this difficult, just ask for a guide to appear and take you by the hand.

And you float out of your body--in your subtle body--and move into this cave, which is even more wondrous as you get inside, because you see that the floor is polished marble. And the more deeply you walk into the cave, instead of getting darker, it's getting lighter.

And you begin to notice strange figures on the walls, and as you walk to the walls of the cave, you are astounded to see pictures of your own life. It is as if you are in a museum, and you are seeing tableau after tableau of scenes from the journey of your life. And with each step you take, you go a little bit further into the past.

So let's say you go back five years and see yourself five years ago.

Where were you five years ago?

Where were you in consciousness five years ago?

What were your hopes; what were your dreams five years ago?

What were you striving to accomplish?

Observe deeply. See yourself and the people you've associated with. Look at the successes, the disappointments, the roads taken, and roads not taken.

See if you can go back even further, let's say ten years. What were you doing? What were you feeling? What were you wanting? What were you working toward ten years ago? What was driving you? Go into it. Go deep. Let the images teach you.

And allow yourself to keep going back and back, and see how the thread of calling, of desire, of hope, has manifested throughout the different stages of your life. That's right.

And now, using the power of your imagination, without manipulating from the mind, allow yourself to go back to the very first time you can remember at this moment when you experienced a sense of calling. Or maybe it wasn't vocational; maybe you were just struck by the beauty of a floating cloud, as Ramakrishna was when he was eleven years old. Maybe you solved a problem in school, and it really moved you. Maybe you saw a picture in a book of an eagle circling a mountain and something opened inside of you--something that wasn't there before, something that no one had told you about or taught you; it came from within you, a sense of possibility, even a sense of destiny.

Open your heart, open your consciousness at this moment, and feel the first time. Go back to that scene when you had a deep sense that there was a pathway for you, that there was a way for you. You may not have been able to understand it, but it was like a light going off within you.

And move into this image and hold it, and allow yourself to feel how you felt when the curtain suddenly parted, and you intuited the depth of your possibility.

And breathe this feeling in, and breathe it throughout your body. And honor it. Accept it.

And as you gradually begin to walk back--and once again observe the scenes of your life--notice how that early sense of calling and possibility would sometimes surface and sometimes be forgotten; how it would manifest in different forms and then go underground.

But notice how it still lives within you. And how it can never be lost.

And you come back to the mouth of the cave and easily float right back into your body, and you remember everything--as you breathe in and breathe out--and feel the ground beneath you, the tree behind you, and the immense beauty and awesomeness of nature all around you.

And you hold to this sense of calling that you once had. And juxtapose it to where you are right now in your life, in the last six months, without judgment.

Has your sense of calling gone underground? Has it taken new forms? Honor wherever you are right now, without any need to draw conclusions, save for acknowledging the mystery and the power of that which is called destiny.

And you slowly get up and stretch out, take a deep breath. And filled with gratitude as you look back upon your life for everything and everyone, you continue on your walk knowing that there are decisions to be made up ahead, and knowing and feeling and intuiting that there's a living process of wisdom at work within you that will show you very clearly your direction.

Breathe in; breathe out. Begin to come back into your waking consciousness. Take your time when you come back from a meditation. Always bring the experience into the physical form, feel the ground beneath you. You can wiggle your fingers and toes to help you get back in your body.

Remember the goal is not to split off from the physical form. The goal is to bring everything together.
